Grants of up to $12,500 are available on a rolling basis throughout the year to individual faculty members who have had little-to-no direct experience using technology in their teaching, but who are still eager to learn and wish to explore technology-based pedagogies in transformative ways.
These are start-up funds aimed at encouraging LSA faculty who rarely use technology in their teaching to gain experience and skill in the use of technology for instruction. Although potential projects could include adoption of new information technology for a course or within a department or discipline, these Teaching Transformed Grants are primarily meant to help faculty gain skills and confidence so they can ultimately change their teaching in additional future courses beyond the specific course in the proposal.
In addition to the possibility of a $5000 faculty stipend ($2500/year for two years), the grant provides funds to support the costs of initiating an effort to use instructional technologies in teaching undergraduate courses. The rest of the funds may go toward hourly wages for graduate student and undergraduate assistance, as well as any equipment, if appropriate. LSA ISS will also provide staff assistance, certain software and applications, basic programming assistance, and, when appropriate, year-long loan of certain equipment.
Conditions on the availability of these funds include:
- The faculty member must demonstrate a strong interest in gaining technology skills and improving her/his comfort level with a previously unused technology. This is not a grant to merely hire someone else to complete technology work for the faculty member.
- There must be a clear plan as to how the student experience and/or structure and content of the course will be transformed by digital content or technology-based student activities.
- The rationale for the new content or structure must be intellectually relevant to student learning goals and course objectives.
- Digital content may not replace regular classroom hours or faculty contact with students. Digital content or on-line components could move certain activities or content outside of regular meeting hours, thus allowing for improved contact and greater interaction during regular classroom hours. (ie: Flipped classroom or action-based learning would be possible; reduced contact hours by moving to online learning is not.)
- The faculty member would be expected to work closely with learning technology consultants from LSA ISS or the LSA LRC, as collaboration and cooperation provide greater opportunity for success and further dissemination.
- Grant recipients and any associated assistants will be expected to present the content of their completed project with other faculty members and serve as a mentor for graduate students and other faculty members in their home departments on questions of technology and teaching.
- Recipients would also be expected to meet briefly with the ITC and would be invited to participate in a faculty panel or showcase in the following year. A brief report on the project should be submitted within a year.
Proposals should be clear about the nature and significance of the project’s impact on undergraduate teaching and student learning. Proposals should describe:
- The need for professional development and improvement of a faculty member’s expertise in information technology, as well as the effort required to use instructional technologies in teaching undergraduate courses. (A letter from the department chair or program director is recommended.)
- The faculty member’s potential for and commitment to professional growth learning to use technology in the course project and in future courses.
- A description of the project and the technology to be explored or implemented
- The approach to be taken in developing the relevant expertise or adopting the instructional innovation in new or existing courses.
- How the project meets the priorities of the department and college
- How success of the project will be determined and evaluated
- Any additional assistance that will be needed to collect resources, prepare materials, set up templates, create workflows, and other work required for the project. Proposals should identify if departmental student staff is available or if outside assistances will be necessary.
Strong encouragement is given to faculty who wish to explore new instructional technologies and gain new skills, even when they are not fully confident that the venture will succeed. The committee reviewing proposals welcomes efforts to extend the frontiers of teaching with technology, even while it supports the implementation of proven technologies. Preference is given to proposals that clearly illustrate how the Teaching Transformed grant will develop the instructional technology skills of faculty members so that they may successfully apply those in classes and make ongoing contributions to undergraduate instruction in the College after the funded project is successfully completed.
Please note: proposals for Teaching Transformed Grants must include a letter of support from the faculty member’s department chair or program director, addressing the need of the faculty member to receive additional professional development, as well as the impact of the project 0n the department/curriculum. The letter can be uploaded with the proposal form or sent directly to email@example.com.

- Software not available through UM or LSA IT
- Costs for digitizing images and texts
- Fees for access to databases
- One-time equipment purchases
- Consultant fees for technical support
- External programmers or application developers
- Project evaluation expenses
Items that require significant rationale to clarify exceptional circumstances:
- Travel and registration fees for relevant conferences, seminars, training, or workshops for graduate students or undergraduates
- Laptop and desktop computers or upgrades
Items that may not be included in the budget request are:
- Cost of on-going cycle of replacements for equipment
- Tuition for student assistants
